As you can see in the second photograph, they drink a variety of soda mostly a blend of regular and diet, while they have no caffeine free options present. Also several of the soda bottles are only partially finished, suggesting that drinking soda in this family consists of opening one, drinking it till you have found the “bliss point”, then putting it back in the fridge. As the Gastropod podcasts points out, soda has become less of a social activity and more of a individual pleasure.
The family does not seem to have any fresh fruit, vegetables, or meat. They use mostly frozen or pre-made meals, as the condense of their freezer suggests. For snacks they do not have many options besides things horridly picked up from the snack aisle in a grocery store. Their selection of snacks combined with the lunch box present in the fridge suggest that the mother frequently works and does not make homemade meals, rather she prefers to heat up meals or side dishes and give her children snacks that are easy to prepare.
The family seems to enjoy frozen foods for desert, items that require cool whip, and popsicles. They use prepackaged meats for proteins, again lending claim to the idea of a working family. In regard to breakfast foods, they appear to enjoy tater tots and pancakes, based on the freezer and the amount of pancake syrup they have. Also they seem to be of the mindset that bread needs to be refrigerated, possibly because they do not eat lots of bread. Also they appear to enjoy salads, based on the lettuce in their refrigerator chiller and the five salad dressings seen.
Overall the family seems to try to live a healthy lifestyle, but overall find the time to make unprocessed meals unavailable. Instead they supplement healthy options with store bought foods like applesauce, salads, and frozen mixed vegetables. The mother is clearly used to packing her own lunch for work, possibly to save money. She clearly has a location in the refrigerator designed to place her lunch box and she keeps cooling packs in the freezer. I would hazard a guess that this family is what Americans typically eat, highly processed and easily made with little time and effort. They drink milk and soda usually and eat lots of frozen deserts.
I would make some sort of comment that it is sad that this family cannot provide more home cooked meals, but honestly, the highly processed contents of this refrigerator can be found in my kitchen and the kitchens of many of my friends – a sad testament to the success frozen and prepackaged food industries have had since the 1950’s (Something from the Oven).
